MY ENEMY…MY FRIEND a story of reconciliation from the Vietnam War by Brigadier General Dan Cherry On April 16, 1972 at 15,000 feet in the skies near Hanoi, North Vietnam, Major Dan Cherry first met Lieutenant Nguyen Hong My. In an intense ten minute aerial battle, Dan shot down the MiG-21 piloted by Hong My. Major Cherry returned safely to his base. Lieutenant Hong My lived but was severely injured during the ejection. Both men returned to the cockpit to fly again. Thirty six years later Dan Cherry and Hong My met face to face in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) Vietnam for the first time since that fateful day. The title of the book, My Enemy…My Friend, may seem at first provocative and initially counterintuitive. But the subtitle, one of reconciliation, is insightful and revealing. Brigadier General Cherry, USAF, (Ret.), masterfully weaves his childhood relationships and experiences into the development of his interest in and love for aviation. While his narrative takes the reader through the highlights of his life experiences, his respect and love for everyone – his family, his squadron mates and his friends – permeates the story. So it is no surprise to read of his quest to search out the fate of the MiG pilot that he shot down more than thirty-eight years ago. My Enemy…My Friend is a heartwarming and intensely personal story…a must read for aviation enthusiasts, historians and anyone who believes in the basic goodness of human nature.
