“The MiG That Didn’t Get Away” by Lou Drendel On April 16, 1972, Major Dan Cherry with Captain Jeff Feinstein of the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron, in F-4D #66-7550, shot down a MiG-21 of the North Vietnamese Air Force. The MiG was the last in a flight of three enemy aircraft, spaced to trap the flight of four F-4 Phantoms who were flying a Combat Air Patrol mission in support of the Linebacker Aerial Campaign against North Vietnam. The trap failed when Cherry and his wingman, Captain Greg Crane, spotted the trailing MiG. After a long engagement, in which several missiles were fired, Cherry and Feinstein acquired a radar lock-on and fired an AIM-7 Sparrow missile which guided to the MiG and blew it up. The enemy pilot was able to eject and got a second surprise when the big Phantom II blasted by his opening parachute. Lou Drendel is a world-renowned aviation artist. His paintings have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Time-Life Publications, Berkley Books, The Journal of the American Aviation Historical Society, EAA Warbirds Magazine and in the 60+ books he has authored. This limited edition print is signed by the artist, Dan Cherry and MiG-21 pilot Nguyen Hong My. F-4D #66-7550 is currently on display at Aviation Heritage Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. www.aviationheritagepark.com
