But it&#8217;s also possible for there to be too much of a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per research carried out by Frontapp, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/frontapp.com\/blog\/remote-work-diagnosing-disconnection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of employees currently receive more than 20 emails a week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and 32% feel there&#8217;s too much correspondence. Even before the pandemic, Ringcentral notes that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/netstorage.ringcentral.com\/documents\/connected_workplace.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of people struggled with too much workplace communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 As you might expect, things have gotten even worse since then.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most everyone has dealt with a chatty coworker at least once. It is a constant, buzzing distraction that somehow finds you whether you&#8217;re in the office or working from home. Generally, these productivity killers come in a few distinct flavors:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The overly-friendly colleague.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The moment you lock eyes, you know your day is shot. They&#8217;ll talk your ear off about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anything<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether it&#8217;s their kids, their weekend, or a project they&#8217;ve been working on. <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The gossip. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A particularly toxic brand of overcommunicator, rumors are the gossip&#8217;s domain. The juicier, the better. They love to hear themselves talk and often <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relish <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the idea of spreading tall tales about their coworkers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The meeting-obsessed. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know meetings tend to be notorious time-wasters \u2014 but this person didn&#8217;t get the memo. Are there minor edits or other concerns that could be addressed in a single email or IM? Better get everyone on a Zoom call.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The micromanager.\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They&#8217;re never content to leave people to their own devices. Autonomy does not exist in their lexicon, and as a result, they&#8217;re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constantly <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">checking in on staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The walking Q&amp;A session. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though this person <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knows <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to do their job, you wouldn&#8217;t know it. They&#8217;re constantly asking questions about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minute<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> details as if they&#8217;re terrified to be self-directed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you&#8217;re looking this list over and thinking that you haven&#8217;t met <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the above. If so, we&#8217;ve some bad news for you. If you haven&#8217;t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">met <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an overcommunicator, there&#8217;s a good chance you might <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s go over a few of the warning signs:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You respond to emails you&#8217;re CC&#8217;d on but that don&#8217;t directly relate to you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;re constantly sending out reminders about things like due dates and upcoming meetings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You repeat yourself\u2014a lot.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type like this.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when sending instant messages<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flooding people with notifications in the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You frequently share irrelevant information without considering what your audience <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to know.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your colleagues know all about you, but you know relatively little about any of them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You never seem to get anything done at meetings that you&#8217;ve hosted.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nobody ever seems to respond to your messages or emails.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that addressing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the above is quite simple. Simply pay more attention to your colleagues\/employees.
