Our Story
1991BlueCotton is actually an accident. In 1991, two college grads were hard on their luck and trying to find a job.
A business venture gone bad left them with close to 1000 t-shirts and a huge credit card bill to boot. In an attempt to alleviate their cramped apartment of the surplus t-shirts and pay bills, they started selling t-shirts to fraternities and sororities at Western Kentucky University.
BlueCotton's first employees, Jim Madison and Angie Norrod, joined the team! Jim was a screen printer and Angie a graphic designer. Angie is still with the company today!
After years of leasing space, BlueCotton moved into the first building owned by the company. It was 12,500 square feet. While the company continued to grow we rented out space to other businesses to help with the cost.
Launched Greekt-shirts.com catering to fraternities and sororities across the country.
Launched the BlueCotton.com Design Studio to broaden our reach to any customer looking for custom apparel.
Expanded operations from 25,000 sq ft to 50,000 sq ft and added 40 team members to serve customers better!
Long-time employee, Julie Denton-Price, bought into the business to form today's partnership with Mike Coffey.
Bitcoin mining
BlueCotton grew it's total investment in the Bitcoin Initiative to $160,000 in Bitcoins and Bitcoin mining. Created in 2022, the BlueCotton Bitcoin Initiative will provide payouts in Bitcoin to employees who stay with the company for at least 5 years. At the beginning of 2025 the investment was valued at over $500,000!

Our mission is to provide opportunities to our team so they may transform their lives. We do this first through personal development classes. Currently, almost 50% of our team attends a class meeting weekly with our owners. This is an opportunity for all of us to be better people by becoming more disciplined. We spend time making personal connections and reading and participating in activities emphasizing positive thinking, leadership, and financial responsibility.
No amount of money is ever enough if an individual doesn’t know how to manage it. This truth transcends all pay scales. Time after time we discover the lack of knowledge in personal finance as the root cause of crises outside of work that inevitably leads to challenges within the walls of work. Our personal development classes are highlighted by a 7-week course on personal finance ranging from macroeconomics, to understanding a pay stub, and even how to start investing. Additionally, we offer Smart Dollar to all team members to help them manage their financial goals..
Understanding the natural gifts and talents of our team members has been a game changer to building a cohesive, productive, and happy team at work! The Working Genius framework reveals each person’s genius (work you enjoy and gives you energy for a long time), competency (work you can do but won’t enjoy for long), and frustration (work you don’t enjoy and probably aren’t good at). We first used this information to identify the gaps in our workforce. Now we incorporate this framework into every job description when hiring, and use it to place our people in the best possible positions to solve problems, work through individual performance challenges, and identify how the way we do work affects those doing the work.
Everyone at BlueCotton is eligible for free Bitcoin! In 2022, BlueCotton gave $120,000 worth of Bitcoin mining equipment to the team. The goal? Educate team members on a long-term perspective on investing and the innovative technology designed to help them fight against inflation. This investment was made at no risk to any employee. Employees receive a payout in Bitcoin by staying at BlueCotton for at least 5 years.
To date, BlueCotton has invested $160,000 towards this benefit that will pay out team members in 2027 and the following years. We believe this investment is a life changing benefit to those who have dedicated a good portion of their career to BlueCotton and we’re thrilled to give it freely! Read more about the initiative.
